This Time Is Different: The Microeconomic Consequences of the Great Recession

From an economic point of view, the period since the recession that began in 2008 has been quite unlike any other period since at least the Second World War, including the periods after the recessions of the early 1980s and early 1990s. Indeed, the slowdown has lasted for longer, and its effects on the public finances, on household incomes and on productivity have been more marked even than was the case in the 1930s. This time really does seem to be different.

Pension Benefit Insurance and Pension Plan Portfolio Choice

We test a specific theoretical prediction: insured pension plans will invest more heavily in risky assets. Our test exploits policy differences across Canadian jurisdictions. We find that insured plans invest about 5% more in equities than do similar plans without benefit guarantees.

This launch event will provide an overview of two papers, presented by IFS researchers. The papers look at the effect of the financial crisis on older households in England and the adequacy of retirement savings of those approaching state pension age. Following presentations from IFS researchers, the Rt. Hon. James Purnell, former Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, will respond to findings and time will be allowed for questions from attendees.

This report provides a new assessment of the proportion of people aged between 50 and the State Pension Age (SPA) who are at risk of having inadequate resources in retirement and considers the characteristics associated with the risk of such inadequacy.
