This seminar will examine the prospects for pension reform and for the welfare of pensioners. It will address the following questions: What role should the state play in supporting the incomes of pensioners? How should retirement ages be chosen? Is there any value in continuing to think in terms of a normal retirement age? Are we saving enough for retirement? What are the prospects in terms of health and disability for the ageing population?
We will draw on the expertise from leading researchers in Europe from North America to help answer these questions. The seminar will be chaired by Frances Cairncross, who is Chair of the Economic and Social Research Council and a senior editor on The Economist.
