Public spending: the outlook is grim - with the threat of darker clouds

The biggest task for whoever is unfortunate enough to win the next general election will be to mop up the gallons of red ink spilt over the Government's finances by the economic crisis. Whatever the real or rhetorical differences between the parties, taxes will have to rise and public spending will need to be squeezed.
