The Institute for Fiscal Studies held a day of talks on issues in public economics of interest to undergraduates in economics and related disciplines. The aim was to focus on the policy implications of research carried out at the institute.
The IFS is a research institute that provides high quality economic analysis independent of government, political party or any other vested interest. We look at a wide variety of public policy issues, from productivity growth to poverty reduction, and from promoting employment to ensuring sound public finances.
Our focus is on careful modelling of individual, household and firm behaviour, combining cutting-edge empirical analysis with detailed understanding of policy practicalities. We always strive to communicate our findings in a clear and comprehensible way.
We have been asked to deliver similar talks at Oxford and Cambridge for a number of years as part of their public economics programmes. The aim of this event was to make them available, free of charge, to a wider audience of students.

Speakers
Jack Britton
Jack's main interests lie in human capital accumulation and discrete choice dynamic modelling.
Peter Levell
Peter joined in 2009. He has published several papers on the microeconomics of household spending and labour supply decisions over the life-cycle.
Kate Smith
Kate is an IFS Research Fellow and an Assistant Professor at LSE, interested in public finance, industrial organisation and applied microeconomics.
George Stoye
I completed a PhD at UCL in 2020. My work examines the drivers of variation in the quantity and quality of healthcare provided to different patients.
