As our population ages, government spending on health, long-term care and pensioner benefits is projected to rise from 14% of national income today to almost a quarter in the 2060s. How can we fund this growth? Is it fair to ask people to pay for their own social care? And where should this spending be focused?

This IFS Public Talk, jointly organised with the University of Manchester and part of the 2019 ESRC Festival of Social Science, will be given by George Stoye, Senior Research Economist at IFS. George will give an economist's perspective on how we, as a country, can pay for our health and social care system. He will also explain how public spending on health and social care has changed over time, will look at how other countries fund this spending, and will consider how we can handle the growing needs of an ageing population over the coming decades. Anita Charlesworth, Director of Research and Economics at the Health Foundation, will be on hand to put your questions to George.

The talk will be held in the Roscoe Building, Theatre B, at the University of Manchester. Doors will be open from 5.00pm, with the lecture taking place from 5.15-6.30pm.

As with other public talks in this series, everyone is welcome to attend, and there will be plenty of time allowed for audience questions and debate.
