Recent years have seen growing concern about unsecured consumer debt, and the problems it can pose for households. At this event IFS researchers will present the key findings from new research looking in detail at the economic circumstances of households with debt:

  • Which kinds of households tend have more or less unsecured debt? How does that relate to their holdings of financial wealth?
  • Which kinds of households are more likely to be spending a large share of their income on servicing their debts, and who is likely to be in arrears? What are the reasons for households ending up under this sort of pressure, and how can they escape?
  • Taking a longer-run view, which kinds of households look likely to struggle to repay their current debts over the next few years? How does that picture change if you account for how the incomes of different groups are likely to evolve?
