The accumulation of wealth is a process which has come increasingly under the spotlight in recent years. There is growing policy and societal interest in understanding when and how households are building up (and running down) wealth, why they are doing so, and how that differs between different types of households.

A new report, funded by the IFS retirement savings consortium and the Economic and Social Research Council, will present new analysis of these issues. In particular, the report explores:

  • how households' wealth has evolved over the period 2006/08 to 2010/12;
  • the role of asset price changes, inheritances, and active saving decisions in this change in wealth;
  • what are individuals' reasons for saving and how have these changed over time and
  • how do individuals' expected sources of retirement income relate to current asset holdings.
