On the 5 June, IFS senior researcher Kate Smith presented at a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Social Science and Policy.  The meeting looked at the likely effect of the sugar tax on public health and children’s health in particular. The government recently extended its campaign against the childhood obesity epidemic by telling the food industry to cut 20 per cent of calories from their products within six years. The action by Public Health England comes on top of its drive to reduce consumption of sugary foods and sweet drinks.

Kate Smith is part of a team at the IFS who are working to understand choice behaviour in the food and alcohol market, which is key to assessing public policy aimed at combating high rates of obesity and diet related disease.
