Public finances
IFS researchers conduct on-going analysis of the outturns of and outlook for the public finances. Our work in this area looks at forecasts of government revenues and spending (overall and on specific areas) and aims to inform public debate, particularly around the time of Budgets, Autumn Statements, Spending Reviews and Elections. Over many years we have kept track of the evolution of the public finances and how different governments have fared.Budget and OBR forecast analysis
IFS researchers analyse the public finance forecasts published at the time of the Budget and in the Autumn Statement. Our annual Green Budget contains our forecasts for the public finances and also provides an in-depth discussion of other issues relating to the public finances, public spending and taxation in the run-up to the Chancellor's spring Budget.Public finance statistics A number of public finance data for the UK and some comparative figures for other countries are made easily available via the IFS website. This research programme aims to clarify some of the fiscal choices that might face Scotland were it to become independent.
IFS researchers discuss topical issues related to the public finances in 'observations'. These are short notes about particularly topical issues.
Over many years IFS researchers have kept track of the evolution of the public finances and how different governments have fared.
IFS receives support from the ESRC to publish a monthly press release comparing the growth in receipts and spending over the year to date with what is implied by the latest Treasury forecast for the year as a whole. The aim is to improve the quality of debate on the public finances by complimenting the analysis produced by city economists.
