Measurement of consumption and expenditure

Household expenditure surveys are used to construct national accounts, to investigate the distribution of living standards and to calculate measures of inflation. It is therefore crucial that they contain accurate information. Research in this area evaluates different survey methods (for instance, into whether it is better to ask consumers to record expenditure in a diary, or recall their spending over some time span) by comparing results across surveys, and by conducting both laboratory and field experiments.
