Drawing on more than 20 years of empirical research Professor James Banks, one of the principal investigators of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, a co-director of the ESRC Centre for the Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy at IFS, and one of the UK's leading researchers in the economics of ageing, gave the IFS annual lecture. The presentation:

  • looked at microeconomic evidence on trends in work, disability and health of older adults in England;
  • explored the relationship between these trends, and relate them to policy change; and
  • considered future policy options and the relationship between working at older ages and public finances in the context of an ageing population.
