There is accumulating evidence that positive wellbeing is associated with reduced mortality and risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and other diseases of older age.1-3 To our knowledge, this association has not previously been investigated in a nationally representative sample in which extensive health and behavioral data are available. We therefore used the English Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSA) to evaluate prospective associations between enjoyment of life and survival.
