Having hit a high of 83 percent (98 percent on unearned income) in the 1970s, top rates of income tax in the U.K. were cut to 40 percent in 1988. From 1988 to 2010 that's where the top rate remained - though the numbers paying it increased relentlessly. By 2010 around one in eight taxpayers were paying the 40 percent rate. Search |
