Researchers at IFS are using Mexican data from the Oportunidades CCT programme to extend a dynamic structural model of school attendance (see Attanasio, Meghir and Santiago (2005) and Attanasio, Meghir, Santiago and Shephard (2008)) by modelling the initial conditions for enrolment.
This extended dynamic structural model can be used to analyse the mechanisms that determine observed programme participation and school enrolment, focusing on the way in which households react to specific incentives given by the programme. Furthermore, it can also be used to examine the potential impacts of changes in the grants ex-ante, and therefore inform decisions over how to structure the grants for school attendance in the future.
