The ESRC/HMRC/HMT Tax Administration Research Centre was launched on 1 January 2013. The Centre has received substantial funding from the ESRC, HMRC, and HMT to undertake research on tax administration to strengthen the theoretical and empirical understanding of tax operations and policies.
The Centre is operated in partnership by the University of Exeter Business School and the Institute for Fiscal Studies. Its research is multidisciplinary, and the research team involves economists, accountants, experimentalists, and psychologists. The Centre undertakes a range of activities including the organisation of workshops, conferences, and training programmes. An important role of the Centre is to build capacity for future tax research so it provides scholarships for PhD students and hosts a large number of affiliated students. It also has exceptionally strong international connections with international members who include: James Alm; Richard Bird; Peter Birch Sørensen; Kim Bloomquist; Richard Blundell; Valerie Braithwaite; Chris Evans; John Hasseldine; Mick Keen; Erich Kirchler and James Poterba.
