Influencing the design of programmes in developing countries
Impact on Society
‘Conditional cash transfers (CCT)’ is a term used to refer to programmes where people receive money in exchange for certain activities, such as taking their children to regular health checks. IFS researchers have influenced the re-design and the new directions CCT programmes are taking:

  • Between 2004 and 2009 one of our researchers was part of the advisory board for the evaluation of the Mexican CCT. This work has led to proposals on changing the programme that are currently being piloted.
  • The evaluation of the Colombian CCT culminated in a presentation in Bogotà in July 2004, followed by a meeting with President Uribe on the design of public policy.
  • We have advised the Inter-American Development Bank to prepare recommendations to the newly elected Colombian government on the design of social policy

An influential book aimed at policymakers and academics and published by the World Bank on CCTs draws on our extensive research. Disciplines outside of economics are also drawing on our research, for example in recent analysis published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
