Impact on Society
In the current climate of spending cuts it is tempting for the government to decide to cut where the victims will shout the least loudly. Investment spending, which reaps rewards largely in the future, is therefore an easy target. ESRC Centre co-director Rachel Griffith sat on the advisory panel of the Royal Society inquiry into the implications of making large cuts in science research. The report provided the case for continued strong funding of science, and was widely reported in media and influential in the political debate around budget cuts.
