IFS relies on grants to fund its research. The Economic and Social Research Council funds the Centre for Microeconomic Analysis of Public Policy at IFS, and the Leverhulme Trust funds the Centre for Microdata Methods and Research. Most other research grants are received on a project basis.

ELSA Consortium Half of ELSA's initial five year budget has been provided by the National Institute of Ageing in the US.
