Half of ELSA's initial five year budget has been provided by the National Institute of Ageing in the US. The NIA have a keen interest in understanding the multifactorial ageing process and cross-atlantic comparisons will bring deeper understanding to the field. The NIA also funds the Health and Retirement Study, that looks at similar issues to ELSA. The second half of the budget has been provided by UK Government Departments which are involved in areas that are related to the ageing process:
