Demand shocks as productivity shocks" (joint with Kjetil Storesletten and Yan Bai)
We propose a theory of exchange of goods built on top of a neoclassical growth model where increases in the willingness to spend by consumers or firms (demand) translate into measured increases in productivity. In these environments there is a role for expansion of public expenditures during recessions. We investigate the empirical and quantitative validity of model economies with these properties. In particular, we estimate processes for demand disturbances that generate the measured productivity movements with constant technology.
