The Economic and Social Research Council has awarded IFS a grant of £240,523 from July 2014 to June 2016 to study the 'Economics of the Police: recruitment, retention and finance'.

The research will be led by Professor Richard Disney and Rowena Crawford. Among the topics to be investigated by the project are: how the quality of police recruits through individual police forces is affected by local labour markets and the relative attractiveness of alternative careers; how exits from the police are affected by retirement incentives in the police pension scheme and job opportunities elsewhere; and the extent to which differences in local revenue-raising capacity through the local police precept affects the quality of local policing.
